Princess Buttercup

On a snowy January morning a litter of FFA show pigs were born. There were 14 piglets in the litter all destined to become blue ribbon winners at the county fair.

Except for one.

She was the runt of the littler born with growth on her belly. She was not show pig material. In fact, if the growth on her belly (a hernia) wasn’t fixed she wouldn’t live long.

Her future was not looking bright. That’s when Beth came along and said “I know where that pig can live!” and called up her sister Nancy at The Good Earth Farm.

After some consideration, Nancy replied “Heck yeah!” and drove to meet Beth and the little pig who was now 3 months old.

The little pig hunkered down in her laundry basket. She tucked her snout into the fluffy blanket and didn’t make a sound on the hour drive back to the farm. It was the first time she had been away from her littermates and she was scared.

Farmer Nancy got to work making the little pig a pen in the building with Harold and Charlie, the two big pigs that live at the farm.

The little pig was very excited to be around new friends; however, the big pigs were not so sure about her.

Farmer Nancy quickly realized that the big pigs were just TOO BIG and it wasn’t safe for the new piglet. Farmer Nancy took her into the house to come up with a new plan.

That’s when Jeff came home from work and declared “She will live in the house! And we will call her Princess Buttercup.”

Princess Buttercup enjoyed life in the house. She played with cardboard boxes, ate breakfast cereal, and slept on a memory foam mattress.

Princess Buttercup met the Vet’s over at the Inwood Vet Clinic who fixed her hernia.

Since then she went on to have many adventures at the farm including:

Princess Buttercup lived a bountiful, happy life on the farm. She made many friends with creatures of all kinds, and shared her exuberance and wit with whoever she met. She got mysteriously sick in the spring of 2024, and there were no nearby X-ray machines big enough to scan for a solution. Jeff and Nancy cared for her tenderly until her death, and although she no longer roams the farm in body, she is certainly here in spirit, playing and wiggling through the long South Dakota days at The Good Earth Farm.
